Poker – A Strategy Game

Poker is a family of casino-type card games where players wager over whether a particular hand will win or not, in much the same way as the jousting ranks. There are four ‘hand’ kinds of poker: straight, four of a kind (also called flush), full house, and one pair. The player will usually raise the ante up until they see that their opponent has gotten all their pairs, at which point they will usually fold.

The raise is what makes a poker hand; it’s the amount by which the pot (the top cards on the table) grows. Raising with a good hand will generally mean getting two cards face down (a flush), three cards face up (a four of a kind), or an ace. The value of your hand is the total number of cards you have in your poker hand before the pot becomes big, including the cards in the flop, including the cards already in the flop, the cards that will be turned over (such as the big blind).

The pot is the amount of money wagered into the pot by the players competing. Some pots are called bridge pots, because the person who wins the initial bet usually ends up winning the subsequent bets. Sometimes, depending on the situation, a person may lose all their chips if they draw a wild card. A wild card is a card other than aces, kings, queens, or jacks. Wild cards can also come in pairs such as a & b or a & c, for example. Players may stay in the same table until there is a finish, at which time the last remaining player will take all of the chips.
